Its shape is reminiscent of Africa, but on a much smaller scale, indeed, Rurutu is a small island with a length of 6 mi and maximum widths of 3.4 mi. “Eteroa”, as it was called before the arrival of the first missionaries, it has a geological structure unique in French Polynesia, further to two major volcanic events. Nowadays, the island possesses raised coral cliffs named “Makatea” sheltering many caves.

An island where it feels good to live

The climate is mild, Given its geographic situation, in the limit of the south convergence, Rurutu benefits of a more pleasant temperatures than the rest of the islands in the group. The island is covered by a lush vegetation and, the fresh valleys shelter many plantations as coffee (and taste absolutely, so delicious!), fields of taro (tuber crop very much appreciated by Polynesians), but also pineapples and litchis fields.  Nevertheless, agriculture remains self-sufficiency…
Rurutu is renowned for its handcrafts, in particular for its basketry in Pandanus fiber which is the main income to many families on the island, as tourism is beginning to develop notably through the whales…
